Tennessee Academy of Science Code of Conduct
The Tennessee Academy of Science (TAS) is dedicated to promoting scientific research and education in the State of Tennessee. TAS members, which include researchers, educators, students, and professionals, are expected to adhere to high standards of ethical conduct in their interactions with each other and in their scientific endeavors. The following Code of Conduct outlines the principles and expectations for all members of the Tennessee Academy of Science:- Respect and Collegiality: TAS members shall not engage in any form of harassment, intimidation, or bullying, including verbal, physical, or online behavior that creates a hostile environment for others. Never make false, biased, or unwarranted claims about another scientist, student, professional colleague, vendor, or staff. Unwelcome advances, comments, or behaviors of a sexual nature are strictly prohibited. TAS members shall also extend respect to all individuals from the meeting host institution or host site.
- Respect for Diversity and Inclusivity: TAS members are expected to respect the diversity of backgrounds and identities among its members and in the scientific community at large. TAS members should strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment that promotes diversity regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, religion, age, disability, veteran status, marital status, parental status, medical condition, or any other characteristic protected by local, state, and federal law. TAS does not tolerate any form of discrimination based on academic or professional discipline or otherwise as outlined by the groups listed above.
- Academic Integrity: TAS members are expected to adhere to the highest standards of integrity in all aspects of their scientific work. This includes being honest and transparent in reporting research findings, acknowledging and citing the work of others appropriately, and avoiding all forms of plagiarism, fraud, and misconduct.
TAS members may report concerns or violations of the TAS Code of Conduct to any member of the TAS Executive Committee – see the Tennessee Academy of Science website for contact information – and the Executive Committee member will discuss the concern with the Executive Committee as a whole. When a complaint is received, both the accuser and accused will be given an opportunity to address members of the Executive Committee about the reported violation. Executive Committee Members may also request direct communication with any party involved. After reviewing all information presented, the Executive Committee will discuss and vote on a resolution. Penalties for failing to adhere to the TAS Code of Conduct will vary based upon the severity of the violation, including up to permanent removal of membership in TAS or banning participation in any TAS events.
To be considered, all complaints must have a reasonable and factual basis for the allegation(s) made. TAS prohibits retaliation, for example via intimidation or threats, against anyone making a complaint based on a reasonable and factual basis.
This code is designed to guide individuals by including minimum standards of ethical professional behavior. This document does not outline every potential circumstance; members of TAS are expected to comply with both the letter and the spirit of the Code of Ethics. State and/or federal law supersedes this policy as applicable. This Code applies to all TAS members as a condition of membership with TAS as well as all attendees, speakers, exhibitors, staff, and volunteers at any TAS-sponsored meeting or event.
