Plenary Presentation

Dr. Paul Armsworth earned dual Ph.D. degrees—one in Biological Sciences from Stanford University and another in Mathematics from James Cook University. He is a Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he leads the Conservation Science Group, an interdisciplinary team focused on how global change affects biodiversity.

At the University of Tennessee, Dr. Armsworth is also a Fellow of the Howard H. Baker School for Public Policy and Public Affairs and is affiliated with the National Institute for Modeling Biological Systems. Beyond campus, he serves on the leadership team of the Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center. His contributions have been widely recognized—he was recently named a Fellow of the Ecological Society of America, received a Faculty Achievement Award from the SEC, and was part of a collaborative team honored with the national Climate Adaptation Leadership Award for advancing state-level conservation strategies across the Southeast.

Dr. Armsworth’s research integrates ecological and socioeconomic data to improve the effectiveness of conservation investments and natural resource management policies. His group examines questions such as:

  • Where do conservation measures, such as habitat protection, deliver the greatest impact?

  • How can these benefits be sustained in the face of global change?

  • In what ways can conservation organizations work more collaboratively to protect biodiversity and enhance nature’s benefits to people?

In addition to his academic work, Dr. Armsworth has advised on federal and state conservation policies and maintains active collaborations with partners in wildlife management and conservation, including federal agencies, state agencies, and NGOs. His scholarship has produced more than 170 publications in leading scientific journals and books.
